A firefighter on the scene of a California car crash involving five children calmed one of the young victims by showing him the animated film Happy Feet on a mobile phone.

The children and an adult driver were travelling in an SUV on an exit ramp when it left the road and rolled several times, crushing the roof, US newspaper The Sun Herald reports.

Casey Lessard, a firefighter from D’lberville, laid down next to one of the young victims as they awaited transport to hospital and did his best to soothe him after the traumatic crash.

He showed him clips from Happy Feet, a 2006 film directed by George Miller, about emperor penguins in Antarctica.

D’lberville Fire Captain Darren Peterson said his firefighters do everything possible to comfort and look after children involved in accidents and traumatic events.

“We do whatever we can to calm them down. The video calmed him down instantly,” he said.
