Pets and DIY go surprisingly well together (that is, until that shoddy homemade avery collapses in on itself). I remember looking after an ex’s rodent and creating him a rather cool extension to his already-ample home. The caption to the Facebook post? “Living in a hamster’s paradise.” Hilarious, right?
Well this guy has created something way more impressive than a few boxes and kitchen roll tubes jammed together. Ben Millam saw those automatic feeders and thought he would create his own DIY version. However, he took it to the next level – turning it into a game for the cat. He leaves balls around the house which his cat, Monkey, has to place into a machine. The balls are RFID tagged – meaning that every time Monkey dispenses one, the machine dispenses treats!
“This all started after I read an explanation of why cats go about repeatedly exploring the same areas: it’s partly to establish and survey their territory, but they’re also practicing ‘mobile’ hunting,” Millam explains. “So what if my cat, while out on patrol, actually found its prey? Surely this would bring him one step closer towards a more fulfilled and self-actualized indoor kitty existence.”
