While visiting Marquette Park beach in Gary, IN, a father made a shocking discovery. “On July 25th, 2015 my family was on the beach when we noticed a lifeguard sleeping. I decided to film her to hold her accountable,” Hugh writes. Hugh was so frustrated with the situation, especially being a husband and father, that he decided to do film the confrontation and post in online.
Hugh walks up to the female lifeguard. Instead of overseeing beach-goers and monitoring activity in the ocean, she’s laying face-down in the sand, her head covered with a towel. Had someone been in need of help, the lifeguard would never have even noticed.
“I used to be a lifeguard for five years,” Hugh tells her. “I just want to know why are you lying down on the job? Aren’t you supposed to be watching the water?”
Instead of apologizing or providing any good reason for snoozing on the job and failing to keep an eye on the swimmers, the woman simply explains that she wanted to be in the shade. YouTube commenters are infuriated with the lifeguard, praising Hugh for calling her out and bringing attention to the issue.
Hugh told ABC News, “If something was to happen to me or my wife or my two children, I would just be devastated, you know. Then she would have to live with that for the rest of her life.”
What a powerful reminder to make sure your children and loved ones will be protected in places that can potentially be dangerous.
