Don’t judge a book by its cover.
Mariana Tolentino is a waitress at a Hooters in Roswell, GA. And, let’s face it — some people assume Hooters waitresses have more going on on the outside than they do on the inside. But it’s Mariana’s inner beauty that led her to do something incredible for one of her customers.
Don Thomas was one of Mariana’s regular customers. He lost both his kidneys due to cancer. Though she doesn’t know him outside of work and had only been working at Hooters a short time, Mariana approached Don one day and asked him if he wanted one of her kidneys. She didn’t even think twice. Don and his family were shocked by this unexpected source of compassion.
Mariana says she felt a higher calling, as her grandmother recently passed away from kidney failure. “I wasn’t able to do anything for my grandma,” Mariana said, “If [Don] can live two more years, happy as he’s ever been, that’s fine with me. That’s not up to me. I did my part, now it’s God’s turn to keep him alive.”
Both Mariana and Don — a pair now bonded for life — recently underwent successful surgery. Thanks to Mariana’s selfless decision, Don will live a longer, happier life.
