92-Year-Old Woman Who Has Attended the Same Church for Over 50 Years Gets a Letter Kicking Her Out

A Georgia woman who’s been a member of the same church for over 50 years says she is no longer welcome in her house of worship.

Ninety-two-year-old Josephine King told Fox6 she received a letter from her church indicating that she should no longer attend because she wasn’t tithing.

Speaking with WALB, King’s nephew Gerald Simmons said:

“She was stunned. She was disappointed. She was shocked.

You shouldn’t chase the individuals down. You shouldn’t do that. If that’s the case, you’re money hungry.”

A woman claiming to be King’s niece posted the letter to Facebook:

The letter, which was signed by Sr. Pastor Derrick Mike, says that King is no longer able to “participate in any engagements [or] worship opportunities” due to “non-support…in the areas of financial and physical participation.”

Simmons went on to say that King was sick for several months, which kept her from church activities, but that she had gone “above and beyond” in supporting the church in the past.

Simmons said he hopes other churches will take note of the situation:

“You got to have money to make these churches run, but it’s not about money. It’s about God. You have to put God first.”

King had been a member of the First African Baptist Church in Bainbridge, Georgia.
