According to the Daily Beast, ten year U.S. Army veteran and amateur MMA fighter Chris Mintz, 30, rushed the shooter in an attempt to protect his fellow students. He suffered five gunshot wounds to his abdomen, both legs, his left hand and upper back. According to his Facebook page, the day of the shooting was also his son’s birthday.

Ariana Earnhardt, Mintz’s cousin told Fox 8: “His vital signs are OK he’s going to have to learn to walk again but he walked away with his life and that’s more than so many other people did.”

Wanda Mintz, the victim’s aunt also spoke to Fox 8 saying: “He could have very easily died. I really think that if he wasn’t such a strong, young guy, he may have died.”
